Spotify Mutes Itself Mac

I use Spotify on my computer from time to time but I hate when the Ads start playing.

Spotify is a music streaming program that is available on multiple platforms and devices. Unlike a lot of programs which are primarily available for Windows, Spotify is also available for Apple. Spotify for Mac runs just as well as any other version of Spotify and is updated regularly to fix bugs and keep content running smoothly.

The first solution I was using was blocking Spotify Ads DNS’s, but that stopped working after a while.

Ever since the recent Spotify update for desktop, I have had an issue where the song I am playing will suddenly 'stop'. After checking the app, the volume controls at the bottom right of the screen have suddenly muted themselves and will not allow me to unmute, even though the music is supposedly still 'playing' and my laptop system's volume. Try closing down the mobile app so it's not running on your mobile and try playing it on the desktop. I've been shutting down my mobile Spotify when i want to play music on the desktop - so far it's been working and haven't muted itself in a while now.

I don’t mind having a break between a few songs, but I don’t wanna hear the Ads, so I decided to create a small script to hack it.

  • Plan Free/Premium Country Device (iPhone 8, Samsung Galaxy 9, Macbook Pro late 2016) Operating System (iOS 10, Android Oreo, Windows 10,etc.) My Question or Issue.
  • My Spotify desktop app keeps muting itself whenever another sound on the computer plays, eg when a video or sound plays on chrome or when I am gaming. The song is still being played just no music is heard but it will come back after I close the window which is playing the sound.

The script does the following:

  1. Using OSX log system I can listen to Spotify events.
  2. Read the events and check if an Ad is about to be played.
  3. If the event is an Ad about to be played automatically mute system audio.
  4. If the next event is a song, unmute system audio.
  1. Open a new terminal (use Spotlight search and type terminal.app)
  2. Inside the new window paste this command and then hit enter

  3. This will create a new folder inside your Home folder called MuteSpotifyAds and will place a new file called NoAdsSpotify.sh
  4. To run the program just copy and paste the code below in the terminal and hit enter

  5. Open Spotify and enjoy!

To exit the program just close the terminal app or press Ctrl+c
